Before joining UConn, Dr. Joo worked in the WIDE (Wide-scale Interactive Development for Educators) World, which is a global online professional development program for over 25,000 educators around the world through inquiry-oriented and highly interactive online courses. For the last two decades, Dr. Joo has also accumulated extensive international experience in working with over 50 different educational systems and multiple countries to improve educational practices with new technologies.

Her current research focuses on two areas:

1) understanding social and cultural aspects of technology-mediated teaching and learning as well as in developing socially and culturally-sensitive teaching strategies and online tools informed by constructivist principles, and

2) exploring the best use of online programs to create and sustain system-wide improvement of learning, instruction and leadership to advance student performance by capitalizing the power of emerging technologies in a coherent and sustainable way.
