Josephine “Josie” Jarrett of Benwood is the first recipient of the Judith Bartell Paesani Vocal Music Scholarship at West Liberty University. Judith Bartell Paesani, one of the scholarship’s donors, earned her bachelor’s degree from WLU’s College of Education and went on to earn a master’s from the University of Connecticut.

Luis Ferreira will begin his Ph.D. studies in educational psychology this spring after facing unforeseen obstacles in obtaining a visa to study in the United States. Accepted to UConn’s Neag School of Education in February 2020, he has made tremendous sacrifices to pursue his doctorate, including moving away from his wife and family in Brazil.

“At a crucial time in our history in which talented women continue to struggle with decisions about how to lead and how to blend family well-being with work responsibilities, it is critical for universities to provide training and opportunities for leadership development for intelligent young women to explore their choices and pursue their dreams,” says Sally Reis, who is a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology and leader of the BOLD Women’s Leadership Network.

The Neag School of Education at UConn announces the recipients of the Neag School of Education Alumni Board Scholarship as Elena Sada, a first-year doctoral student studying bilingual and multicultural education in the Neag School, and Denée Jackson, a master’s student in the Neag School of Education’s Higher Education and Student Affairs program.
