Our hearts ache. George Floyd’s life matters. Breonna Taylor’s life matters. Ahmaud Arbery’s life matters. Black lives matter.

We are reaching out to share resources that we believe might be helpful as you reflect on the current and ongoing racism in our country. We hope that these resources will help you reflect on and process the current moment. Of course, this list is not exhaustive, as there are so many dynamics, so many theories, so many histories to grasp in order to do our work of understanding anti-racism. We hope it will, though, provide a place for you to start or some new directions to go. As you find useful resources, please continue to share and learn together.

“We need to get ahead of this crisis to survive and thrive together. It is time to provide alternate options in education preparation so we can continue to prepare high-quality leaders and teachers within this ‘new normal,'” says Patricia Virella, a Ph.D. student at the Neag School and faculty member at Sarah Lawrence College’s Art of Teaching Program.

Grace Beshlian and Alyssa Conklin will return to the UConn women’s lacrosse program for the 2021 season as announced by head coach Katie Woods. Both will return after the NCAA’s decision to grant spring athletes another year of eligibility.

Ann Traynor, the director of advising and certification for UConn’s Neag School of Education, says students graduating this spring have begun creating online lesson plans to show prospective employers, and school professors are helping critique the lessons.

“This graduation celebration is fitting because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as this is the way we started ScHOLA2RS House – a lot of uncertainty, some anxiety, fear of the unknown. Yet many of us were courageous to face this uncertainty, as we knew a blessing would come on the other side. That blessing has manifested today, the first ScHOLA2Rs House freshman cohort to graduate,” said Erik Hines, the first faculty director and former Neag School professor.

Juanyi Li’s parents planned to fly from their hometown of Kunming, China, to Connecticut to watch her graduate. They had never been to campus and Li was eager to show them what life is like on an American college campus. “They made plans, but they had to cancel them,” Li said. “I started to plan my graduation a year ago. But it’s all canceled now.”

With school closures announced across the country, Neag School faculty, alumni, and students share resources and expertise on teaching, learning, homeschooling, and parenting during the pandemic.
